I had the honor of photographing a portrait session with the extraordinary multi-instrumentalist James Morrison. His presence, curiosity, and musical aura made every frame come alive.
James Morrison is an Australian jazz legend and a true virtuoso.
Born on 11 November 1962 in Boorowa, New South Wales, he began his musical journey early — piano at six, brass instruments by age seven, and already performing professionally as a teenager.
Though best known as a trumpeter, his mastery spans many instruments: trombone, tuba, euphonium, flugelhorn, saxophones, clarinet, double bass, and piano.
He’s composed works for big ensemble, led his own band projects, and performed on the world’s most prestigious jazz stages.
He was the voice behind the opening fanfare at the 2000 Sydney Olympics — an unforgettable moment blending music and ceremony.
Working in close proximity to such a multifaceted artist, I aimed not just for likeness, but to convey his musical identity — the depth, the versatility, and the passion. Each portrait is meant to reflect the soul behind the instruments.
