Portrait photos of Jürgen Ellensohn, accomplished trumpeter and esteemed Schagerl Artist.
Jürgen Ellensohn studied with Prof. Lothar Hilbrand at the Vorarlberg State Conservatory and with Prof. Hans Gansch at the Mozarteum Salzburg — in both cases earning his diploma with distinction.
His first engagement as principal trumpet led him in 2003 to the Bern Symphony Orchestra. From 2005 until 2020, he held the same position with the hr-Sinfonieorchester / Frankfurt Radio Symphony.
In parallel to his orchestral life, Ellensohn has been highly active in education. He taught at Bern, Frankfurt, Mainz, and Vorarlberg, before taking a full professorship for trumpet at HfM Würzburg. Since 2025, he is also appointed Professor of Trumpet at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München.
Beyond technique, Jürgen also trained as an academic mental coach (University of Salzburg) and has shared this dual expertise through teaching and workshops in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and within orchestral academies.
He is a member of ensembles like Pro Brass and The Philharmonic Brass, and regularly collaborates in chamber music settings.
As a long-time user of Schagerl instruments (since 2001), Ellensohn emphasizes their unique tonal character and the freedom they give in artistic expression.
In this portrait session, I focused on capturing Jürgen’s dual identity as virtuoso and mentor — the intensity in his gaze, the nuance in his embouchure, and the calm confidence of years on stage and in the classroom.
